Choosing the right lighting size is important for both appearance and comfort. A light fixture that is too small may look unfinished, while a fixture that is too large may overwhelm the space or feel too low.

This guide provides general sizing suggestions for chandeliers, pendant lights, kitchen island lighting, dining room lighting, and other common lighting applications.

How to Choose the Right Chandelier Size

A common method for choosing a chandelier diameter is:

Room length + room width = recommended chandelier diameter in inches

For example:

10 ft room + 12 ft room = approximately 22 inch chandelier diameter

This formula works well for many dining rooms, bedrooms, foyers, and living rooms.

For larger open-concept spaces, high ceilings, or statement lighting, you may choose a larger fixture depending on the design and visual balance of the room.

Dining Room Chandelier Size

When choosing a chandelier for a dining room, the fixture should be proportional to the dining table.

A general recommendation is:

The chandelier diameter should be about 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the dining table.

For example:

The chandelier should usually be centered above the dining table, not necessarily centered in the room.

How High Should a Chandelier Hang Over a Dining Table?

For standard 8-foot ceilings, the bottom of the chandelier is usually placed:

30–36 inches above the tabletop

For each additional foot of ceiling height, you can usually raise the chandelier by about:

3 inches

How Many Pendant Lights Do I Need Over a Kitchen Island?

The number of pendant lights depends on the length of the island and the size of each pendant.

General suggestions:

Always consider pendant width, spacing, and clearance from the island edges.

Foyer and Entryway Chandelier Size

For foyers and entryways, the chandelier should feel balanced with the height and width of the space.

If the foyer has a high ceiling or open staircase, a larger or taller chandelier may be suitable.

The bottom of the chandelier should be at least 7 feet above the floor in open walking areas.

For two-story foyers or staircases, the chandelier may need to be larger and vertically proportioned to fill the space properly.

Bedroom Lighting Size

For bedrooms, fixture size depends on room size, bed size, and ceiling height.

For a bedroom chandelier or ceiling fixture:

Room length + room width = approximate fixture diameter in inches

For bedside pendant lights, make sure the fixture is not too low or too wide for the nightstand area.

Hallway and Wall Light Spacing

Wall lights and sconces are often installed:

60–66 inches from the floor to the center of the fixture

Spacing between wall lights may vary depending on hallway length, wall size, and fixture style.

For long hallways, wall lights are commonly spaced:

6–8 feet apart

Check Ceiling Height Before Ordering
